Saint-Martin-de-Ré est une commune française, située sur l'Île de Ré, chef-lieu du Canton de Saint-Martin-de-Ré, faisant partie de l'Arrondissement de La Rochelle dans le département de la Charente-Maritime et la région Poitou-Charentes.
Riche de plusieurs ouvrages fortifiés conçus par Vauban (citadelle, enceinte, corps de garde), la ville est intégrée au Réseau des sites majeurs de Vauban et inscrite sur la liste du patrimoine mondial de l'humanité par l'Unesco depuis le 7 juillet 2008.
Une étoile de pierre entre terre et mer

A partir de 1681, Vauban projette de construire un réduit central à Saint-Martin, capable de servir d’abri à toute la population de l’île en cas de débarquement ennemi sur un autre point.
L’enceinte urbaine, unique par ses dimensions, un demi-cercle d’1,5 kilomètres de rayon et de 14 kilomètres de rempart, est réalisée d’un seul jet sans contraintes géographiques liées au site.
La citadelle, carré parfait, n’est accessible que par une seule porte d’entrée monumentale, ouvrant sur un petit port retranché. Des bâtiments intérieurs, prévus pour 1200 hommes, subsiste une caserne, la chapelle, l’arsenal, les souterrains des bastions et le pavillon d’officier.
Conservée intacte dans son écrin de glacis non urbanisé, Saint-Martin-de-Ré est la plus belle application conservée du premier système de Vauban et sûrement le plus bel exemple d’un réduit insulaire.
Jadis place militaire puissante et port actif, Saint-Martin-de-Ré est devenue une charmante cité aux rues étroites et paisibles.
